It’s easier to buy a gun than do these 100 things in America

Earlier this week, a reporter from The Star walked into a gun store and purchased an AR-15 — similar to the Sig Sauer MCX used in the Orlando massacre — in seven minutes flat.

Her experiment has been substantiated by others in the field. In fact, some guns, including pistols, have proven harder to get even though they’re slower to recharge (and hypothetically less deadly). Despite the fact that Omar Mateen was on the FBI’s terrorist watch list, he was able to legally purchase the deadly weapon.

That’s why we’ve composed a list of 100 things that are harder to get than an AR-15. Americans love to queue even more than their British brethren — except, it seems, when it comes to guns.   Read more…

Three space explorers, including the European Space Agency’s first British astronaut on the International Space Station, are back on Earth after spending 186 days living and working in space.

British astronaut Tim Peake, NASA’s Tim Kopra and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko landed in a remote part of Kazakhstan on Saturday morning at 10:15 a.m. BST after undocking from the Space Station and speeding back home.

The three crewmembers came back to Earth tucked inside a Russian Soyuz spacecraft designed to withstand the intense heat created when coming back into the planet’s atmosphere. Read more…

Chilling Facebook Live video captures shooting death in Chicago

Warning: This post contains extremely graphic and upsetting images.

It’s a hot summer night and Antonio Perkins is hanging out on the sidewalk in a Chicago neighborhood. He’s broadcasting on Facebook Live, talking to people seemingly commenting on the video.

Then a series of shots ring out. The phone tumbles to the grass below. Bits of red can be seen on the green blades. Is that blood? Then the screams come:

“Oh my God!”

“Tony!”

“Call the police!”

“He’s bleeding out his month and nose right now!”

The 28-year-old was shot in the neck and head about six minutes into his Facebook Live broadcast Wednesday night, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Emergency responders found him face down around 8:45 p.m. and by 9:07 p.m., he was pronounced dead. On Friday, a hospital spokesman confirmed Perkins was the man killed in the video, according to the New York Times.  Read more…

Two days after the brutal murder of Labour MP Jo Cox, police are investigating the motive that pushed the suspect, Thomas Mair, to fatally shoot and stab the 41-year-old woman near the northern city of Leeds.

Cox is the first sitting MP to be killed since 1990, when Ian Gow was assassinated by the Provisional Irish Republican Army. But that is not the only surprising aspect of this killing.

Firearm attacks are extremely rare in Britain, which has some of the strictest gun laws in the world

Eyewitness Clarke Rothwell told the BBC the attacker “had an old-fashioned, antique sort of gun that he had to reload.”  Read more…

Battle of the Procrastinators: ‘Game of Thrones’ is really about how we waste time

Obligatory warning: Here be mild spoilers for Game of Thrones season 6, episode 8.

There couldn’t be a stranger place to start a story about Game of Thrones than by talking about a Joni Mitchell song. But given that this is also a story about procrastination, it seems entirely appropriate.

My favorite of Joni’s hits is “California.” Not just because she serenades the state where I live, but because its bright melody barely hides its ambiguity. Right after listing all the reasons she wants to go home to California, she sings: “So I bought me a ticket, I caught a plane to … Spain.”

Anyone who has bummed around the world — and a girl who went to Braavos and back when she had a To Do list to check off in Westeros the whole time — can relate.  Read more…

You can now ask Siri to search for YouTube videos on your Apple TV

This new feature, which was highlighted onstage at this week’s WWDC, was expected to roll out this summer. But it’s available right now for all fourth-generation Apple TVs.

Here’s how to do it: Using the Siri remote, simply say “Search YouTube for Justin Bieber falls down” or “Show me E.T. as a charming ’90s sitcom on YouTube” and Apple TV will enter your search commands into the YouTube app.

You can search for specific videos, people, or channels. You can also search for more general terms, like “funny cat videos.” Siri’s dictation search also functions inside the YouTube app. Read more…

Fleeting firenado caught on camera in California wildfire

A wildfire in Southern California that has already spread to over 4,000 acres created a firenado on Thursday, a rare yet mesmerizing event that’s just slightly more believable than a sharknado.

The wildfire has caused Santa Barbara County to declare a state of emergency as the blaze spread over the Santa Ynez Mountains.  The LA Times reports that only 5% on the fire has been contained.

The firenado, which actually isn’t a tornado at all, was captured on video in Refugio Canyon, and was formed as the result of hot, dry air rising quickly from the ground, according to Live Science. As the air rises, vertical columns of air are formed which then begin to swirl in a vortex. When these vortexes are formed near a fire, burning material, ash and gasses are picked up, much like a dust devil would pick up sand.  Read more…

Building ships, playing with Legos … same thing, Science Channel series says

Https%3a%2f%2fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2fuploads%2fcard%2fimage%2f120148%2fships

The Science Channel wants to show you how to build everything

Well, at least they’re going to try.

On How to Build … Everything, scientists, experts and other generally smart humans break down the “step-by-step processes behind some of the world’s most complex apparatuses” — from Apache helicopters to hovercrafts — in “a way that armchair engineers and curious minds can follow,” according to the network.

The result is a sort of tongue-in-cheek instruction manual, should you desire to, I dunno, build a ship one weekend.

Speaking of ships, the first episode will  show how engineering, clever use of materials, good planning result in these floating wonders of the sea.  Read more…
