KABUL, Afghanistan — The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing on a peaceful protest in the Afghan capital on Saturday that killed at least 80 people and wounded more than 200, marking the first time the extremists have struck Kabul and raising fears of their growing strength and capability in Afghanistan.

The attack was the deadliest to hit Kabul in 15 years of civil war. It struck a demonstration by Afghanistan’s Hazara ethnic community, who were marching for a major regional power line to be routed through their home province. The Hazaras are Shiite Muslims, most Afghans are Sunnis. Read more…

SAN DIEGO — Baby Groot is out of his pot and running wild in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 — and the world is gonna go nuts for him. The crowd at Comic-Con did, anyway.

Marvel Studios revealed a generous reel of footage from the Guardians sequel at their Saturday night Hall H panel, and now the plant is out of the bag: Groot is still just a lil’ guy in the big galaxy.

Though he’s only 6 or 8 inches tall, Groot is ambulatory, sentient and no wallflower. But he’s still having a little trouble grasping language.

In one scene, Baby Groot is trying to bust Yondu and Rocket Raccoon out of a Ravagers’ cell. As their captors sleep, Yondu and Rocket are trying to explain to Groot what it is that they need to get out — and he keeps bringing back the wrong things.  Read more…

SAN DIEGO — “Teach me.”

To stop being such an aggressive, know-it-all dickhead?

That’s the challenge that The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) apparently has for Stephen Vincent Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) — this according to footage exclusively released Saturday night at Marvel Studios’ panel for Comic-Con.

Marvel showed a Hall-H-only extended scene in which Strange — a brilliant surgeon whose hands are crushed in an accident — first encounters The Ancient one in Tibet. After mistaking an Asian man for the venerated healer and teacher, he begins a conversation with the real deal … that gets off on the wrong foot. Read more…

SAN DIEGO — Brie Larson, suit up. The Oscar winner is, officially, one of the most powerful superheroes in the comicbook movie universe.

Larson was reportedly in talks for the role earlier this year, and Disney/Marvel was able to close her deal in time for a Comic-Con appearance. Larson, who won Best Actress for her role in Room, will be the first person to portray Carol Danvers onscreen.

As Captain Marvel, Danvers is one of the most powerful individuals in Marvel Comics — the closest thing they have to Superman.

The ace Air Force pilot has her DNA infused with a powerful Kree alien’s in an incident that gives her enormous strength, speed and agility, the ability to fly and survive in outer space, and the power to shoot powerful proton blasts from her fists. She starts her superhero career as Ms. Marvel, but is encouraged by Captain America to take on the mantle of Captain Marvel, which once belonged to one of Marvel Comics’ oldest characters. A NASA spacecraft watching the sun has captured a new video of Earth’s nearest star burping out plasma.

The video was captured by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) from July 9 to 10 and shows the special machinations of the star’s complicated magnetic fields.

In some ways, it looks like this is a video played in reverse, but it isn’t.

“Each burst of plasma licks out from the surface only to withdraw back into the active region — a dance commanded by complex magnetic forces above the sun,” NASA said in a statement. Read more…

Included in the furry fun are swimmers Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte and Missy Franklin, runner Allyson Felix, gymnasts Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas, soccer player Carli Lloyd, tennis player Venus Williams and many others.  Read more…

So much for secrets.

Ahead of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 announcement event on Aug. 2, we now have our first look at how the smartphone’s iris scanner will work.

In a video posted to YouTube (and originally published on China’s Weibo), we can see the phone detect a person’s eyes and then instantly unlock the screen.

I had to rewatch it a couple of times because the eye detection happened so quickly.

As you can see in the video above, the lock screen will be split into two halves: the top for the iris scanner and the bottom for the regular pattern/PIN unlock half. Read more…

A cache of more than 19,000 emails from Democratic party officials, leaked in advance of Hillary Clinton’s nomination at the party’s convention next week in Philadelphia, details the acrimonious split between the Democratic National Committee and Clinton’s former rival, SenBernie Sanders.

Several emails posted by Wikileaks on its document disclosure website show DNC officials scoffing at Sanders and his supporters and in one instance, questioning his commitment to his Jewish religion. Some emails also show DNC and White House officials mulling whether to invite guests with controversial backgrounds to Democratic party events. Read more…

We first heard that Neil Gaiman‘s epic novel America Gods was being made into a TV series last year, and now we finally have a look at what the adaptation looks like.

The trailer for the series about a war between old and new gods and the struggle of an ex-con (Shadow Moon, played by Ricky Whittle) caught in the crossfire, was revealed during this week’s Comic-Con.

However, the brief trailer doesn’t reveal much other than a glimpse of the show’s visual style and overall tone. But we do get appearances from heavyweight character actors like Ian McShane (Deadwood), Peter Stormare (Fargo), Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) and Crispin Glover (Bartleby, Charlie’s Angels, Back to the Future).  Read more…

To say Twitter became a bit hectic this week is an understatement. Arguments and taking sides went on for the entire seven days, to varying levels of bitterness.

From Trump vs. Hillary to Taylor vs. Kanye to Ghostbusters vs. Hordes of Angry Dudes, Twitter has become as much of a battleground as ever. But things weren’t all bad, as people got good news from My Chemical Romance and even happily married their re-tweeters (in one specific case).

1. Mike Pence shares a vice-presidential Chili’s lunch
